Leones Glacier Trek: Short Day Hike or Two-Day Camping Option
The Leones Glacier (also called Ventisquero Leones) is one of the best options for a one-day trekking route on your visit to Puerto Río Tranquilo — a lovely way to fulfill your dream of walking alongside one of these immense, ancient ice masses. But pay attention, because there are 2 different route and timing options.
You can do a simple one-day trek, or camp and extend your experience by walking on the glacier itself.
The route follows the Leones River, along which you can take in the local vegetation, on the way to Lake Leones, where you'll be able to admire the Leones Glacier amid the stillness of the landscape. This trek takes about 5 hours, has no steep sections, is very hiker-friendly, and is suitable for all ages.
The outing combines a boat crossing with a walk along a gently sloping trail (with an elevation gain of just 140m, spread evenly across the route). At a total length of about 9km, it's a quick, easy option to reach, located halfway between Puerto Río Tranquilo and Puerto Guadal, and this excursion presents no major physical or technical difficulty. It's the perfect day option to add to your Patagonian adventure itinerary.
Now, if beyond admiring the glacier's grandeur you also want to walk on it, the trip gets longer and becomes a different kind of adventure. Since you'll need to spend a night out in nature, you'll sleep in a tent and live the experience like a true explorer.
On the second day, with crampons and a helmet, you'll finally be able to walk on the glacier and see up close the incredible composition of its structure, colors, and thousands of years of natural history in ice formations.
Remember: you dream it, and we organize it for you.
