Laguna San Rafael: A Day Trip
In an earlier post, we suggested you spend a few days in Puerto Río Tranquilo, staying of course at Hostería Costanera, but we didn't go into detail about what else you can do besides the Marble Caves — because few people know that in a single day... yes! in a single day, you can visit Laguna San Rafael.
About two and a half hours from Puerto Río Tranquilo is Bahía Exploradores, the place from which small boats set sail daily toward the lagoon.
Aboard them — with a prior reservation, of course — you'll sail for another two and a half hours until you reach the lagoon's icebergs and finally see the glacier's wall. During the trip you'll enjoy a hot coffee and a nice snack, then have lunch while taking in the sight and sound of the wonderful scenery this enormous glacier offers with its beauty.
You'll also be able to take a short walk to see the ruins of the Ofqui hotel, which, amid hundreds of kilometers of uninhabited coastline, was conceived in the late 1930s as a spearhead for the colonization of the southern coast. It's a story you'll learn more about when you're there with your guide.
Most importantly, enjoy a good whiskey on thousand-year-old ice, soak in the majesty of the place, and remember that it's everyone's responsibility to look after the planet so that places like this can keep existing and we can all keep marveling at its beauty.
The return time to Exploradores is around 5 p.m., and on the way back you'll of course have a teatime snack, because a full belly makes a happy heart.
